These Films Were Made in Boston

Gone Baby Gone

This 2007 film, starring Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris, is an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name and follows the investigation of a young girl’s kidnapping by Boston detective Patrick Kenzie (played by Affleck). The film features several locations throughout Boston and nearby Cambridge, including Harvard Square and nearby communities like Quincy and Everett, Massachusetts. There are also scenes filmed on Washington Street and Hancock Street in Boston. Because of its stellar cast and gritty story-telling, the film won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 2008.

Mystic River

Another adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel, Mystic River, tells the story of a crime in the present day that is inseparable from a crime that occurred in the past. Starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins, the film won Academy Awards for Penn (for Best Actor) and Robbins (for Best Supporting Actor) at the 2004 Oscars. The film is set in Boston, and several locations throughout the city are prominently featured in the film, including locations in Franklin Park, spots in Canton, Massachusetts, and places in Jamaica Plain.

Mystery Street

While not the most well-known of movies that utilize Boston as their setting, Mystery Street is the kind of quintessential film noir that was, according to many accounts, the first instance that a film crew opted out of shooting on sound stages in Hollywood and instead hit the film on location in the streets of Beantown. The film follows a crime in the Boston area and the subsequent efforts to find the perpetrator. Boston and Cape Cod are featured prominently in the movie, including the Harvard University Campus.

The Departed

One of Martin Scorsese’s numerous gangster-film triumphs, the Departed follows the inter-weaving politics of an Irish mob unit and the police who investigate and infiltrate their ranks. The film won four Oscars in 2007, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Several prominent Boston locations are featured throughout the film, most notably the Massachusetts State Police Headquarters in Framingham.

Boston is a city full of rich history and plays prominently in American sports culture, making it an absolute hub for American tourists from all over. It’s no surprise that Boston is featured heavily in American cinema, particularly in films that want to reflect Beantown’s formidable, gritty reputation in their storytelling. These are just a few movie locations you can hope to see if you decide to tour Boston’s prominent place in American films.
